Beeswax and 100 percent soy wax candles are best: These types of candles are healthier for you and your indoor air quality, they are more cost-effective, and are cleaner burning, with fewer drips. In addition to being biodegradable, they also tend to be sustainable. However, check that your soy candle is entirely or mostly soy and not a paraffin-soy mix.
Candles scented with natural essential oils are ideal: While standard paraffin wax candles are also available fragranced, the scents included are often synthetic, yielding potentially harmful smoke and fumes. Train your candle: When first lighting your candle, let it burn for more than a few minutes. Then, allow the candle to melt into a complete pool of wax across its entire surface. This warmup helps your candle ‘remember’ the rim, making sure the candle burns down evenly and entirely over subsequent lightings and allowing continued easy access to the wick.
Maintain your candle: By keeping your candle’s wick trimmed, you will ensure a consistently strong, bright flame and limited smoking. We recommend you keep your wick around seven millimetres long. An excellent way to trim is to wait for the candle to cool, and use a wick trimmer to trim the wick to exactly 7mm.
Protect your candle: Try not to place your candle in the way of breezes, vents or fans, as air currents create an uneven burn and excessive smoke and soot particles, staining your candle’s container.
Keep your candle clean: Don’t put burnt matches, bits of wick or anything else into the candle pool, as this will interfere with the candle’s chemistry, causing an uneven burn. In addition, debris can cause the wick to clog, preventing it from accessing and diffusing the candle's fragrance.
Rest your candle: Once you’ve snuffed your candle, allow it to cool for at least two hours before relighting it. This good habit helps retain your candle’s shape and avoids wax leaks.
